Engagement Day: The Small Moments Worth Remembering

An engagement passes quickly. Here are the details and moments to make sure are photographed, and how to fit in a few relaxed portraits.

An engagement is often the first time both families celebrate together. It is shorter and more intimate than the wedding, and it moves quickly. A little planning makes sure the moments that matter are not missed.

The Details

Before guests arrive, set aside a few minutes for the rings, the ring tray, the cake and the decor. These quiet still-life photographs set the scene and are impossible to recreate once the evening is underway.

The Ring Exchange

Let us know the order of the ceremony in advance, and who will be standing beside you. During the exchange, take a breath and slow down. Holding the moment for a second longer gives a much better chance of capturing both your expressions and the families’ reactions.

Fifteen Minutes for Portraits

Ask for a short break away from the crowd, ideally when the light is good. Fifteen calm minutes is enough for a set of portraits of the two of you, in your engagement outfits, before the evening gets busy.

The People Around You

  • Parents and grandparents during the ceremony.
  • Friends and cousins as the celebration gets louder.
  • The cake cutting and the first dance, if you are having one.
  • A few family group photographs before people start leaving.
