Haldi Day: How to Plan for Beautiful Photographs
Haldi is one of the brightest, most joyful days of a wedding. A few simple choices about timing, decor and portraits make a big difference to the photographs.
Haldi is colourful, loud and usually a little chaotic, which is exactly why it photographs so well. The yellow of the marigolds and turmeric, the laughter of cousins and the playful energy make for some of the liveliest images of the whole wedding.
Daylight Is Your Friend
If you can, hold haldi in the morning or early afternoon, outdoors or in a space with plenty of natural light. Daylight shows the colours of the ceremony at their best and keeps skin tones natural.
Portraits Before the Turmeric
Once the haldi begins, outfits and faces change quickly. Set aside ten minutes before the ceremony for clean portraits in your haldi outfit, in front of the decor, while everything still looks fresh.
Decor That Frames You
A simple backdrop of flowers, fabric or carved screens gives the photographs a sense of place. Leave space for the bride or groom to sit comfortably, and avoid strong coloured lights over the stage, which can tint skin unnaturally.
Let the Fun Happen
The best haldi photographs come from family and friends simply enjoying themselves. Our job is to stay close, stay out of the way and catch the moments as they happen.
