Preparing for Your Baby’s First Photo Session
How to get ready for a calm, comfortable newborn or baby shoot at home, from feeding times and room temperature to including grandparents.
The first weeks with a baby go by in a blur. A newborn or baby session slows a few of those moments down so you can keep them. The most important thing to know is that the session runs on the baby’s timing, not ours.
When to Book
Very young newborns tend to sleep deeply and curl up naturally, which suits the sleepy, wrapped portraits many parents love. A few months later, babies are awake, alert and smiling, which brings a completely different energy. Neither is better. Choose the stage you most want to remember, and get in touch during pregnancy if you would like the earliest weeks.
On the Day
- Keep the room comfortably warm. Babies settle better, especially if they are unwrapped for a few frames.
- Plan a feed just before we start, so the baby is full and relaxed.
- Leave plenty of time. We pause for feeding, changing and cuddles whenever they are needed.
- Keep outfits simple: soft fabrics, plain colours and nothing scratchy.
Safety Always Comes First
We never put a baby in a position that is uncomfortable or unsafe for the sake of a photograph. A parent stays within arm’s reach throughout, and anything that looks like a tricky pose is either done with support or not done at all.
Bring the Family In
Some of the most precious photographs from a baby session are not of the baby alone. Parents, siblings and grandparents holding the new arrival create images that matter more with every passing year.
If you are expecting or have just welcomed a little one, write to us and we will plan a session around your family’s routine.
